AMA Drone Report 03.21.19: New FAA Boss, Great Lakes Drone Co, UAV Retrieval

Also: Skylum Introduces Airmagic, Resort Community Ban, State Farm Drone Pilots, Airborne Programming

Well... there’s good news and bad news coming from Washington, DC... with the announcement that the Trump Administration has FINALLY nominated a new FAA Administrator.

The good news is that we finally know, for sure, who we’re dealing with... the bad news is that the guy comes from the airline industry... which has not always been very kind to the unmanned community. The President has nominated Stephen Dickson, whose last major gig was as senior vice president of flight operations for Delta Air Lines. Dickson is a graduate of the Air Force Academy and was a fighter pilot before flying for Delta. He retired from the airline last fall. Drone airshows, and their popularity, continue to grow. The speedy rise in visibility that the drone community has experienced has certainly benefited it and contributed to a more positive public perception of a technology that is not always viewed positively in many media reports. Better yet; every airshow packs in the newest aviation technology for people to see, experience and sometimes interact with. Great Lakes Drone Company has announced that Carolina Dronz will do just that for our UAS industry at the upcoming Sun ‘n Fun and EAA Airventure 2019 events. Be careful out there! A Forest Park, GA man was fatally injured last week while trying to dislodge a drone that had become entangled in power lines. 37-year-old Ruff Fitzgerald Teasley, 37, was using a pole to attempt to dislodge the aircraft from the power lines when the pole touched one of the wires. First responders attempted to revive him until Forest Park Rescue arrived to transport him to a hospital, but he did not regain consciousness. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!
