Drone Operator Charged With Flying Near Rescue Fails To Appear In Court

Warrant Issued For The Pilot Cited In January

The operator of a drone who was cited for interfering with the rescue of a person in California failed to appear in court April 7, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The drone pilot is 55-year-old Gerald Destremps. He was cited by police on January 27 after he allegedly flew his aircraft near a helicopter attempting a long-line rescue of a person who fell from a Pacifica cliff. The pilot said he had to increase altitude to avoid a collision with the unmanned aircraft.

Destremps has been charged with interfering with a rescue, a misdemeanor that carries a penalty of up to six months in jail.

The online local news site SFBay.ca reports that the judge issued a $10,000 warrant for Destremps, meaning police will be looking for him, and he could be arrested on the bench warrant should be be stopped by police for another reason, according to Chief Deputy District Attorney Karen Guidotti.
