NAACP Demands Hallmark Pull Space-Themed Graduation Card

Hears Something Other Than "Black Holes" On Card's Audio Chip

A graduation card featuring the maniacally-talking cartoon characters "Hoops and Yoyo" has drawn the ire of the NAACP in Los Angeles because of a reference to "black holes."

The organization says it sounds like the characters say "black whores," and demanded that the "demeaning" card be pulled from the shelves.

Fox News reports that Leon Jenkins, speaking for the NAACP in LA, said it was "very demeaning to African-American women when it made reference to African-American women as 'whores' and says 'watch your back'.

What the characters say on the card with an embedded audio chip is "And you black holes. You're so ominous. And you planets, watch your back."

Hallmark said the card, which has been on shelves for three years, emphasizes a space theme and that the graduate could one day "conquer the universe." Even after receiving that explanation, the NAACP said that's not what they heard, and insisted that the card be pulled.
