New AMA Day Camp Program Now Available For Educators

Created For Teachers Who Want To Promote And Instruct Model Aviation

The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) Education department is proud to announce a new resource for educators and outreach volunteers. AMA Day Camp was created for educators seeking guidance for how to promote and instruct model aviation.

“AMA Day Camp is a smorgasbord of activities, supported by video instructions that our members and clubs can use in their local outreach efforts,” said Bill Pritchett, AMA’s Education Director. “You could have a half-day experience at your field, or an entire week. It’s laid out for you to review, choose the activities, and plan the camp time and experience accordingly. We’re fortunate to have received a LightSpeed Grant to fund this fantastic new resource for our members.”

This new resource will help educators:

  • Promote and deliver their own Day Camp
  • Get ideas and activities for the classroom
  • Receive guidance from AMA Education Program Development and Outreach Specialist Dr. Gordon Schimmel

The AMA has posted several videos to its website to offer suggestions for activities. They include:

  • The FPG-9 activity, teaching the basic science concepts of flight using a 9-inch foam paper plate. This activity requires very little time, and is great for very young children
  • The Jetstream video shows how to build and fly the Jetstream Glider. This is a great activity to do with kids outside or in a gymnasium
  • The Paper Planes video will help teach students basic science concepts using paper airplanes, and have lots of fun in the process

Other videos deal with the concepts of rockets and parachutes.
