Pilot Fatally Injured In Thunder Mustang Accident

'Live Bait' Went down Friday Near Council, ID

The pilot of a P-51 replica 'Thunder' Mustang was fatally injured Friday when the aircraft went down for unknown reasons near Council, ID.

The pilot has been identified on the Nut Tree Airport Mustang Days Facebook page as Tom Gaston. He was an Air Force reservist and described as an experienced Thunder Mustang pilot.

The Reporter newspaper in Vacaville, CA reports that, according to the Adams County (ID) Sheriff's office, the plane, named "Live Bait" after a famous WWII ace, went down north of the Council, ID airport. The person who posted news of the accident on Facebook said that Gaston had been testing the airplane after some repairs had been made. There was no indication as to what those repairs entailed.
