California Power Systems, LSA West Join Forces To Offer Rotax 912 Course

First Class Scheduled For August 4, 2007

With the advent of the light sport aircraft category, many aircraft mechanics have had to become familiar with the erstwhile Rotax 912 -- the powerplant of choice in many LSAs -- very quickly. Until now, however, there has been little formal structure to that process.

Starting on Saturday August 4, 2007 Light Sport Airplanes West of Salinas, CA -- in association with California Power Systems of San Leandro, CA -- will host the first of its kind Official LSA Line Maintenance School. Representatives with both companies tell ANN the course meets the requirements for the endorsement of the Engine Specialty portion of the light sport rule for Rotax 912 Engines.

This is the first time the newly written Rotax factory approved syllabus will be given, allowing attendees to fulfill this important requirement. Up until now, all training that was available was strictly informational for owner/operator schools, and it did not fulfill the legal requirements on this material.

The 16-hour Rotax 912 Line Maintenance School Level 1 is for all interested mechanics and end users. Class will be conducted by Rotax factory Trained Technician Eric Tucker, and subjects covered will include:

  • Rotax history and development in the aircraft engine market
  • In depth discussions on four stroke engine theory and design
  • Rotax engine designations and identification
  • Detailed explanation of all scheduled maintenance tasks
  • Bing Carburetion theory and maintenance
  • Bing Carb synchronization both mechanically and pneumatic
  • Oil, Filter, and coolant change
  • Gearbox inspection, maintenance, testing, and theory
  • Differential Compression Testing and evaluation
  • Compliance with Rotax Factory Service Bulletins and warranty procedures

Students will participate hands-on in the all activities on an actual aircraft installation. Participates will be supplied all printed material including all Rotax Parts, Service, and Service Bulletin Manuals. All attendees will receive a Certificate of Attendance, that is recognized as fulfillment of LSA Level 1 Line Maintenance for Rotax 912 engines.

Class size is strictly limited to 20 students, and registration must be guaranteed with a credit card number. Credit cards will be pre-approved but not be charged until all seats are filled. Cost of the two day course is $500.

While the seminar is open to anyone, this 16-hour course can qualify companies to be eligible for Rotax Repair Station status for Line Maintenance Level 1. Anyone interested in attending is invited to contact the companies at the FMI links below.
