Reports: Indonesia's Garuda Airlines Plans Fleet Update

Hopes To Order 25 New 737-800s

A report in China's People's Daily Online says Indonesia's PT Garuda Airlines plans to buy 25 Boeing 737-800 jets, valued more than $1 billion US.

Airline CEO Emirsyah Satar made the announcement at a Monday press conference. "Almost every month in the period of 2009 to 2012, the new planes...ordered by Garuda will arrive one by one," he said.

Before the purchase is confirmed, the airline will need to approve the order with its creditors, Satar added.

Indonesia's aviation industry has been under fire after a string of crashes that claimed hundreds of lives. Critics have included Indonesian government agencies. As Aero-News reported earlier this month, a Garuda 737-400 overshot the runway in Yogyakarta province and burst into flames, killing 21.

Indonesian officials have pointed the finger at the country's aging airline fleets, but observers outside the country say lax safety and training standards are a more likely culprit.
