Based On USAF Squadron Officer Program
One hundred and eighteen teens from across the country will
gain a comprehensive perspective on leadership, teamwork and
problem-solving at Civil Air Patrol's Cadet Officer School, one of
the top professional development opportunities available to youth.
The 10-day course will be held at Alabama's Maxwell Air Force Base
July 13-23.
Patterned after the U.S. Air Force Squadron Officer School,
Cadet Officer School is an academically challenging, in-depth study
of leadership combining lectures, seminars and hands-on training.
Instructors will guide cadets through the psychology of leadership
and problem-solving techniques. They will practice what they learn
through a series of writing and speaking assignments that will
culminate with a group project that tests their ability to overcome
obstacles through planning and teamwork.
The course will be conducted through the combined efforts of CAP
members and Air Force active duty, reserve and Air National Guard
personnel. "Cadet Officer School will give these young people
a stronger foundation in leadership and problem-solving, which will
help them as they navigate a challenging world," said CAP National
Commander Maj. Gen. Amy S. Courter. "This course will do more for
these cadets than helping them advance in the CAP Cadet Program.
They will reap the rewards of these skills for years to come as
more well-rounded individuals and future business leaders, and
their communities, families and colleagues will also, in turn,
benefit from the skills taught here. The possibilities are
endless."
This leadership opportunity is one of 30 National Cadet Special
Activities sponsored by CAP this summer. These activities allow
cadets to hone their skills in a variety of areas, including search
and rescue, flight and emergency services, science, citizenship and
military courtesies, and to explore aerospace technology and
aviation careers. In 2008, 1,064 youth participated in
CAP-sponsored summer activities.
