USMC Takes Delivery of 737 Turned C-40A

Boeing 737 Soldiers on as Logistical Airlifter

The Tactical Airlift Program Office delivered the first of 2 C-40A aircraft to Marine Transport Squadron VMR-1, prepping the Corps for affordable long-distance airlift capability.

The C-40As were "uniquely configured" for the USMC, beginning their lives as Boeing 737 passenger aircraft before being overhauled. They now sport palletized seating and a "Combi Soft Barrier" system allowing the carriage of cargo and pax simultaneously. Additional niceties include new engines, winglets, power systems (gotta have those iPads juiced up on the flight deck), and LED lighting throughout the aircraft.

The first aircraft were delivered towards the end of May, offering the Corps another, cheaper option to haul their equipment and people from one location to another without requiring outside assistance. The second C-40A is on track for delivery this fall.

"Delivery of this aircraft meets a critical Marine Corps requirement for organic long-range logistical airlift capability,” said Col Steve Puckett, PMA-207 program manager. “These aircraft have been specially equipped for agile tasking and can be reconfigured on the spot to carry Marines, cargo, or a combination of both."

“This is a great accomplishment for our C-40 team,” said Jim Thompson, PMA-207 Fixed Wing/Operational Support Aircraft deputy program manager. “As with most aircraft acquisition efforts, there were challenges, but I am proud of the accomplishment of our small team. Their hard work, devotion, and patience have contributed to, and permitted the delivery of a critical asset to the Marines.”
