FAA Works To 'Optimize Airspace' Around 21 Major Airports

CSSI Wins Support Contract For Airspace Redesign

The FAA plans to optimizing the airspace around up to 21 of the nation’s busiest airports – including Washington, D.C., Dallas, Charlotte, Northern and Southern California, Houston, and Atlanta – through the FAA’s Optimization of Airspace and Procedures in the Metroplex (OAPM) program. Once completed, OAPM will help address major issues faced in today’s busy metro areas, including flow congestion, inefficient routing and altitudes, airports in closing proximity and other factors like environmental constraints.

To assist with the initial study and support for the first year of the program, the agency has awarded a contract to Washington, DC-based technical and engineering services company CSSI. The contract, with a one-year base period and four option years, is worth more than $6 million.

“This is exciting work because we’ll be able to leverage our expertise in air traffic management, airspace safety, and airspace capacity,” said Cynthia Castillo, CSSI president and CEO. “We’re looking forward to getting started and continuing to help the FAA make the skies more efficient.”

As the selected contractor, CSSI will participate in airspace study teams and support team members in their development of notional airspace and procedure redesign efforts. CSSI employees will also support the design and implementation teams in their actual design of airspace and procedural efforts through design and implementation phases, and will provide program management, documentation, and report development support.
