'FlightPlan RNP Predictor' Introduced By Jeppesen

Service Allows Operators To Integreate Real-Time GPS-Based Navigation

A new service which allows operators to switch from using traditional ground-based waypoint routes and procedures to implementing real-time GPS-based required navigation performance (RNP) operations has been introduced by Jeppesen, which developed the service in coordination with technical support partner DW International.

The "Jeppesen FlitePlan RNP Predictor" tool for commercial aviation, business and private aircraft operators uses RNP procedures to allows airlines to operate more efficiently by flying more precise approaches based on satellite data, which reduces overall fuel consumption and emissions output and mitigates aircraft noise impacts.  The new RNP solution improves upon Jeppesen's pioneering receiver autonomous integrity monitoring (RAIM) prediction technology, which provides predictions of GPS satellite availability and assesses the integrity and accuracy of GPS-based navigation signals. 
       
Southwest Airlines recently became the first Jeppesen commercial aviation customer to integrate the new RNP prediction tool. 

"The Jeppesen FlitePlan RNP Predictor is a new tool that enables us to capitalize on our significant investment in RNP approaches that will produce bottom-line improvement within Southwest Airlines' operations," said Captain Jeff Martin, Southwest Airlines assistant director of Operations.  "Efficiency is the foundation of our environmental commitment, and making the switch from ground-to-satellite-based procedures will help us save fuel and reduce emissions."

The Jeppesen FlitePlan RNP Predictor computes a prediction report of the aircraft's Actual Navigation Performance (ANP), considering factors such as aircraft type and configuration at a particular time and place, given current GPS satellite status information.  The new RNP tool also enables both regional and international operators to comply with all FAA, European, ICAO and other global RAIM prediction requirements, implemented either as a stand-alone service or integrated seamlessly with commercial flight planning systems.   

"We introduce our new Jeppesen FlitePlan RNP Predictor at a time when the commercial aviation industry is seeking new ways to operate more efficiently and institute cost savings," said Thomas Wede, Jeppesen senior vice president and general manager, Aviation.  "Through reduced fuel burn, flying RNP procedures will also allow airlines to operate in a more environmentally-friendly manner.  We are excited to offer this new RNP prediction service that assists commercial operators in improving performance."

By using the Jeppesen FlitePlan RNP Predictor, pilots accessing GPS satellites for navigation, rather than ground-based radio signals, will make more precise approaches to runways and will spend less time waiting for clearances at increasingly congested airports.
