Airborne-Flight Training 01.07.20: FAA v DPEs, Pilot 100i Trainer, Forces to Fly

Also: B737-800 FFS, Frasca Sim, Educational UAS Protections, Virtual Pilot Job Fair

The Society of Aviation and Flight Educators (SAFE) tells ANN that the recent termination of a popular DPE by the San Antonio FSDO has highlighted common questions about FAA management in the DPE program nationwide, and SAFE is asking the FAA to study and implement systemic improvements.

An FAA Examiner designation is a one-sided arrangement favoring the FAA. The designation is, in the FAA's words, a "privilege not a right" and may be terminated at any time with or without cause. Despite these terms, the FAA has recently increased available DPEs nationwide from 800 to over 1000 and eliminated geographic boundaries; positive change is happening. Piper Aircraft has received type certification from the FAA for the Pilot 100. The Pilot 100, which was announced during Sun-n-Fun in 2019, is the value priced addition to Piper’s trainer-class line. Following certification, Piper began deliveries to its launch customer, American Flyers, who will be taking delivery of eight Pilot 100i aircraft by the end of 2020. DoT has released a final report on Forces to Flyers, a three-year research initiative offering interested military veterans an opportunity to earn commercial pilot’s licenses and flight instructor certifications. The report evaluates the initiative’s success in meeting project goals and provides lessons learned for future efforts to assist veterans in obtaining flight training to become airline pilots. The report also discusses pathways and opportunities for Americans seeking to become airline pilots, including flight training options. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
