Crop Duster Down On Takeoff From Pompano Beach, FL

Brand New Air Tractor Was Being Ferried To Brazil

The pilot of an Air Tractor crop duster walked away from an accident Saturday after the brand new airplane reportedly lost power and went down in a parking lot near Pompano Beach Air Park (KPMP).

Ken Elliot of Woodland, CO was taking the airplane to Brazil by way of Puerto Rico. The Air Tractor was slated to agricultural work in the South American country. Television station WFOR in Miami reports that, according to the Broward County, FL sheriff's office, Elliot said he noticed smoke coming from the engine when the airplane was only about 10 feet in the air. The 50+ year pilot was working on that problem when the airplane went through the airport perimeter fence and impacted several cars in a parking lot, coming to rest wedged between two of them.

The FAA confirmed a flight plan to Brazil. While Elliot was uninjured, the plane reportedly had visible damage to the left wing. No one on the ground was injured in the incident.
