James Shimer from Chesapeake Sport Pilot spends some time to show us the new Calidus Autogyro brought to us by Autogyro USA. Built in Germany, it’s constructed of composite and steel. It’s a sleek little autogyro that can cruise at about 90 knots on a Rotax 912 engine.
It has a cruise range of about 400 nautical miles, so it’s a good cross-country machine, and it has very good short field takeoff and landing characteristics. The avionics are high tech and it even has an autopilot which is unusual for an autogyro.
This little beauty is sport pilot eligible but because light sport aircraft regulations don’t allow for factory built autogyros, it’s being imported to the U.S. as a fast build kit. We were told that the construction time can be as low as 50 hours. It’s an exotic looking little aircraft that you just have to see.
