Aero-TV At OSH21: ANN Speaks With Owner & Designer of Viking Aircraft Engines

Jan Eggenfellner Shares A Moment At Oshkosh To Talk Engines

ANN spoke with Jan Eggenfellner, Owner & Designer of Viking Aircraft Engines, at Oshkosh about the new technology they brought to the show in the form of two different engines: a 150 and a 195.

Eggenfellner starts off the conversation by talking about the 150 Engine. “The 150 is still in production by Honda because that's what we do, convert Honda engines for aircraft. The engine comes from the Honda HR-V, which is a very popular Honda car,” Eggenfellner explains.

The 195 engine is from the Honda Accord, and uses a 1.5 gasoline direct injected, turbo charged engine. The engine is outfitted with a propeller, something unique among the other engines displayed.

“We are having fun lately participating in the movement of STOL demonstrations and competitions that are going on around the country and we would like to be on the forefront with engines, but we also like to be on the forefront when it comes to propellers, so we are working very closely and have a partnership with Duc Propellers in France, to manufacture and show a propeller specifically made for that type of flying, for getting off the ground quickly,” Eggenfellner shares. “It’s an all carbon fiber 95 inch propeller.”

Plans for bringing the Viking engine outfitted with a Duc Propeller to market are in the works.

Viking has had some changes recently that include Jan and his girlfriend Melissa getting married. They have run the company together for five years. He credits most of their customer service success to her, as he reveals “she is an expert, more so than me at being a people person. People love her for that, and that has moved our company forward by having good relationships with our customers,” he says.

Viking is moving towards more efficient engines that produce less emissions, and has moved from being an alternative type of engine to a primary engine for many homebuilt airplanes.
