Airport Scanners Could Be Deployed In Two Weeks

150 Scanners Expected To Be In Use By Year's End

While they're not saying where, or how many, Department of Homeland Security officials do say the first of 150 full body scanners are ready for deployment a some U.S. airports in two weeks.

UPI reports that the scanners, all built by California-based Rapiscan, will all be in place by the end of the year.

The equipment has been paid for using $25 million in stimulus funds. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has said the scanners would detect the type of explosives used by the person to allegedly attempted to bring down an airliner on Christmas Day.

The machines were ordered over a year ago. It has taken that long for airports to allocate space for the devices, as well as the construction of privacy rooms so that the scans are not out in plain view.

A few U.S. Airports are already using the devices, but they are not yet installed at such hubs as New York's JFK, Chicago's O'Hare, or Washington's Dulles airports.
