Google Eyes Massive SoCal Hangar For Office Space

Former Hughes Aircraft HQ Was Where Spruce Goose Was Built

The 300,000 foot facility where Howard Hughes built the Spruce Goose may soon become the headquarters for another corporate giant ... Google.

The internet behemoth is eyeing the massive hangar space for corporate offices, according to sources familiar with the negotiations. The Wall Street Journal reports that the campus is already home to several high-tech firms, such as Google-owned YouTube, but the hangar space is empty, and developer Ratkovich Co. is looking for a massive tenant for the massive space.

Google might just fill the bill. Discussions are reportedly still in the early stages, but if the deal goes through, the company might wind up leasing nearly the entire facility.

The hangar is in the Playa Vista neighborhood of Los Angeles. It has attracted numerous tech and media companies over the past three years, according to the report. Since it was sold in the 1980s by the Howard Hughes Aircraft company for development, it has been a sound stage for such movies as "Independence Day" and "Transformers". The hangar's two bays are each 750 feet long and the ceiling is more than seven stories high.
