Classic Aero-TV: AMA’s Rich Hanson – Protecting Model Aviation Freedoms

Model Aircraft Have Operated Since Long Before The NAS Existed

ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell, visited the headquarters of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) and took the opportunity to talk with Rich Hanson, the Director of Government and Regulatory Affairs for the AMA.

Model aircraft have operated since long before what we call “the national airspace system” even existed. Hanson points out that as aviation became more complex and the airspace system was created, modelers have found a way to work in harmony with full scale aircraft.

But the recent advanced of multirotor devices has changed things, and model aviation is being challenged. As the FAA looks at the commercial use of multirotor aircraft, the AMA is working hard through its government affairs division to make it clear that aircraft modelers are not the problem.

As you watch the video and listen to Hanson talk about the issues of modelers, it almost sounds as if you are listening to organizations such as the EAA and AOPA discussing similar issues as it applies to full scale aircraft and certificated pilots. This video provides insight into model aircraft and the issues they face.

Everyone in the aviation community has a stake in how regulations will be formed that affect model aircraft flying. This video is something all pilots should watch to become fully aware of how government regulations affect all of us who share the airspace. We think you’ll be impressed by what you see in the AMA.
