D-Model WACO Classic Nears Certification

New Aircraft Built Under Original FAA Typer Certificate

The folks at WACO Classic tell ANN that they are nearing certification of their D-model aircraft based on a half-century old design. The WACO Classic YMF 5-D sports a larger engine, electronic engine instruments, and an MT Taper Tip Propeller.

The Battle Creek, Michigan company first flew the D model in October. The company says the demo airplane is now available for test flights at their factory.

Claiming to be the only company producing a 1930's era biplane to current FAA and EASA standards, WACO Classic Chief test pilot Carl Dye wrote late last year that says the YMF 5-D has shown improvements in climb, cruise, and fuel consumption as compared the "C" model. Dye said the improved performance was largely the result of the very efficient propeller blade design.

The WACO was originally built in Troy, Ohio, and according to the WACO Air Museum was the leading civilian aircraft manufacturer from 1928-1935. The Company began in 1921 as the Weaver Aircraft Company, and the name was changed to WACO aircraft company in 1929. The WACO Classic Aircraft Corporation rolled its first airplane, a YMF Classic, in 1986.
