Plane Strikes Semi Tractor Trailer While Making Landing Attempt

Pilot, Truck Driver Both Uninjured In The Incident

Russ Street was driving a semi tractor-trailer along Ohio Highway 53 last Tuesday when he heard a loud thump and felt the trailer rock to the point he thought it was going to topple on its side. Then he stopped the truck at the Fremont Airport, he found the landing gear of an airplane embedded in the empty trailer.

The landing gear had previously been attached to a Piper PA-23-250 Aztec airplane being flown by 71-year-old John Randall of Fremont, OH, according to Ohio State Trooper Donte Hans. The Sandusky Register reports that Randall had been on a proficiency flight and was returning to the airport when the accident occurred.

The Aztec is registered to Randall, according to FAA records. He reportedly has about 3,500 hours in his logbook, according to the paper.

Randall managed to belly-land the airplane on the runway at Fremont Airport (14G) and skidded off into the grass adjacent to the runway.  Neither he or Street were injured in the incident. It was not reported how Randall managed to be low enough to strike the truck with his extended landing gear on the approach.
