Spanish Airport Officials Looking For Owner Of Abandoned Airliner

MD-87 Has Been Sitting On The Tarmac In Madrid For Years

A McDonnell Douglas MD-87 has been sitting on the tarmac at Adolfo Suárez-Madrid Barajas airport for years, and airport officials are now trying to find out who actually owns the plane.

CNN reports that officials can't confirm how long the plane has been sitting in the same spot at the airport, but under spanish law, an official notice must be posted after a plane has sat for three consecutive months, and then wait a year to see if anyone comes forward to claim it.

If it continues to be unclaimed, it will be considered legally abandoned and sold to the highest bidder at auction.

Earlier this month, that notice of abandonment went out to the Boletín Oficial del Estado, the official gazette of the Kingdom of Spain.

The registration number of the MD-87 is EC KRV.
