Daniel Elwell To Remain As Deputy FAA Administrator

Congress Passes Waiver To Allow Him To Stay In The Post

When Steven Dickson was confirmed as the new FAA administrator, it left acting administrator Daniel Elwell is something of an awkward situation. A 60-year-old rule precludes two former active-duty military officers from serving at the top of the civilian agency. Both men are Air Force Academy graduates.

An act of congress was required for a waiver to allow Elwell to return to the position of deputy administrator, where he had served before being named acting administrator when Michael Huerta stepped down at the end of his term last January.

That waiver was granted by Congress late last week, meaning Elwell can stay on with the agency.

“Dan Elwell has done an outstanding job as Acting FAA Administrator, and we applaud Congress for allowing him to continue serving as that agency’s Deputy Administrator,” said Airlines for America president and CEO Nicholas E. Calio. “We look forward to working with Steve Dickson as the FAA Administrator and Dan Elwell as Deputy Administrator to ensure that the U.S. aviation system continues to be the best in the world. What a great team to head the FAA.”
