Airborne 09.30.19: 'Mr. Mustang', Virgin Galactic, Combat Rescue Helo

Also: ALPA Testifies, Crew Arrives Safely At ISS, Centennial College, Rolls-Royce Pearl 15

After a storied career preserving, flying, and caring for one of the world’s most iconic aircraft, the P-51 Mustang, Stallion 51 Boss Lee Lauderback has been selected as the 2019 recipient of the Bob Hoover Award of Aviation Excellence.

Lauderback’s outstanding record as an aviator, flying aviation historian, and airshow demonstration pilot, accruing the stunning total of over 10,000 hours in the legendary P-51 Mustang, were just a few of the factors that made him such a compelling nominee and, ultimately, the selectee for this year’s honor. The Award was initially announced during a press conference on behalf of the work of the BHLF, on the opening day of EAA AirVenture 2019, but due to Lee's intensely busy schedule, he was unable to accept the award, in person, until the Foundation could meet up with him at a Fly-In, in Tullahoma TN. The follow-on spacecraft to VSS Unity is continuing to take shape at the Spaceship Factory in Mojave, CA. The fuselage and cabin for Virgin Galactic's next spaceship have been mated to the completed wing assembly, and the two tail booms have been mated to the spaceship’s rear feather flap assembly. The completion of these two milestones brings assembly of the next SpaceShipTwo a major step forward. With these milestones, the part fabrication of the wing, fuselage, cabin, nose and feather flap primary structures is now complete for the second commercial spaceship.  In addition, the majority of systems integration for the wing is complete, as well as the build of the cabin crew station installation. The Sikorsky HH-60W Combat Rescue Helicopter (CRH) program achieved a Milestone C decision from the U.S. Air Force, which moves the program into low rate initial production. The Combat Rescue Helicopter will perform critical combat search and rescue and personnel recovery operations for all U.S. military services. The four instrumented test aircraft at the Sikorsky Development Flight Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, demonstrated their production readiness during USAF performance and flight load survey testing. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
