Spaceport Nova Scotia Signifies Intent to Compete in Satellite Delivon the World Stage
Canada will soon throw its hat into the space launch ring, making use of its expansive territory and technical capabilities to go toe-to-toe with rocket service providers in the US and Europe.
Transport Minister Omar Alghabra announced that the federal government will begin developing the regulations, safety standards, and licensing conditions needed to begin authorizing Canadian satellite launches. If all goes well, the country could see its first commercial launches taking place in the next 3 years.
"For many years, Canadian satellites have launched from sites in other countries," said Alghabra. "It's time for us to start launching them right here at home. Today's announcement is a strong signal to invite those who are interested to come on in and take advantage of the advantages Canada has."
One eager contender for the crown of Canada's premier launch specialist, Maritime Launch Services, applauded the decision. They are currently the sole commercial spaceport operator in Nova Scotia, putting them in pole position for the civil space race the second government regulation allows.
"Breaking ground on Spaceport Nova Scotia was a clear signal to the global space sector that Canada would soon have global launch capabilities – and satellite companies from around the world have since signaled their strong demand to launch from Nova Scotia. Maritime Launch has satellite client multi-launch term sheets, a long list of launch vehicle companies across North America and Europe looking to partner, and now, the support of the Government of Canada. With today’s announcement, the global space industry can be confident that commercial launch in Canada is not only here, but it has this government’s support. It’s time to launch Canadian space innovation from Canada and welcome the world to Canso, Nova Scotia for commercial launch."
Maritime's Spaceport began construction in September 2022 on 300 acres of crown land, with a 40-year lease on the province.
