EAA-Restored Piper J-3C-90 Cub Headed To Virginia
Congratulations are in order for the lucky raffle winner, Bob Cowgill (EAA# 607430) on winning the 1946 Piper J-3C-90 Cub restored by EAA’s Clark Ellis (EAA# 607430), and our consolation to the holders of the 2,999 other tickets that missed cut in snagging the Cub.
During the 2022 EAA AirVenture, the EAA Aviation Foundation held a raffle to raise money for the EAA’s aviation programs. It’s mission is four-fold; “to educate, engage, empower, and inspire the aviators and enthusiasts of tomorrow”.
Mr. Cowgill, currently residing in Cumberland County, Virginia flew his Piper Cub home earlier this week. Its was definitely slow going for the American Airlines pilot with 35 years of service, and whose seniority permits him a superior perch on international flights! It was on one of his recent overseas jaunts that he received notice of his winnings! As an Airframe and Powerplant mechanic and Senior Appraiser designation from the International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading and Accredited Senior Appraiser with the American Society of Appraisers, the author believes that Mr. Cowgill can truly appreciate the work that went into his winnings!
The restoration project was helmed by Ellis Clark (EAA# 71644). You may be surprised to learn that there were two prize options: the aircraft (valued at $52,000) or $25,000 in cash. Tickets sold for $100 a pop, and the aircraft features the following characteristics: aluminum ribs, spars, and ailerons from a Dakota Cub wing kit, Univair PA-11 struts, two Air Energy 12-gallon wing tanks, and a useful load of 358lbs.
