RCMP UAV Assists In SAR Effort

Helped Locate A Family That Was Lost In The Woods

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) says one of its new UAVs assisted in a Search and Rescue (SAR) effort that located a family ... including a 17-month-old child ... that had become lost in the woods near Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The two adults with their child reportedly walked into the woods last Saturday afternoon, according to a report from Canada's Global News. They got lost, and called police using a cell phone after night fell.

After trying using sirens and dogs to locate the family, the RCMP launched one of its UAVs, which were put in to service earlier this year. The family was located by the aircraft using a thermal imaging camera in a heavily-wooded area near Topsail Lake, officials said.

The family eventually walked out of the woods about 2:00 am local time Sunday. Everyone was fine.
