Ukraine Bans Russian Flights

Imposes Sanctions On Moscow For Support Of Separatists

The government of Ukraine says it will ban Russian airlines from operating in the country because of Moscow's support of separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Buying Business Travel reports that the ban would go into effect on October 25. Both Aeroflot and Transaero would be affected by the ban.

In a government meeting, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said "In accordance with a decision by the Security Council, the government of Ukraine is adopting a decision to ban flights by Russian companies, primarily Aeroflot and Transaero, to Ukraine.

"Russian planes with the Russian tricolour have no business in Ukrainian airports," he said.

Russia threatened to retaliate with sanctions of its own should the flights be banned.

Russia is already facing sanctions imposed by the U.S. and E.U. over the annexation of Crimea by Russia.
