Navy Returns ‘Fat Albert’ To UK For New Center Wing Box

Marshall Aerospace Gets Nod For Complex Replacement Procedure

Fat Albert, perhaps the world’s most well-recognized C-130 Hercules support aircraft for the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels flight demonstration squadron, is headed to Marshall Aerospace in Cambridge, UK, to have its entire center wing box replaced. This is a complex engineering procedure some liken to spinal surgery.

The iconic aircraft is considered the standard-setter for capabilities and performance that exemplifies the reliability and versatility of the most successful military airlifter in history.

Fat Albert is the logistical workhorse that helps make the demanding Blue Angels air show schedule possible. It covers more than 100,000 miles every season transporting as many as 45 personnel and a warehouse of specialized equipment across the United States.

In addition to its transport duties, Fat Albert is also a performer that starts off every Blue Angels show with a 15-minute demonstration of maneuverability, high-speed, low-altitude passes, steep climbs, sharp banks, and combat landings. It is currently the only C-130 that performs regularly in flight demonstrations.

The center wing box is what is known as a “lifed article” — a critical component that has a finite operational life span in total flight hours or years in service. It is the primary major structure that serves as the attachment for the aircraft’s outer wings to the fuselage and bears the brunt of the significant operational load and sustains extreme stress during flight.

Upon reaching its end of life, it must be replaced to maintain the aircraft’s airworthiness, or else it is grounded. The installation of a new enhanced service life center wing box from Lockheed Martin is a very cost-effective way to extend the useful lifespan of Fat Albert by more than 20 years.

Replacing the 11-meter structure is not a simple procedure, and must be carried out by a team with extensive engineering experience and specialty equipment.

Marshall is an expert on replacing center wing boxes, having completed nearly 80 such replacements on both legacy C-130 models and the current production C-130J model. In 2024, Lockheed Martin named Marshall the world’s first authorized Centre of Excellence for C-130 wing box replacements.

Fat Albert will also undergo routine maintenance while at Marshall, including a complete paint strip and repaint in the distinctive Blue Angels livery.
