iFly EFB’s New Flight Planning App that Won’t Break the Bank

Each of the App’s Features is Tailored to Streamline Interactions

The team at Adventure Pilot returned to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in 2025 with its iFly EFB: an iOS, Android, and Windows-compatible app with all the features of you-know-who in a much more streamlined and affordable package. The company is currently offering a 30-day free trial plus a buy-out deal if you’re already subscribed to another EFB provider.

iFly EFB emphasizes clean, responsive menus, large high-contrast buttons, and minimal touch interactions—no deep gestures, dragging, or searching that make changing displays impossible in bumpy weather. Most functions are just two taps away. The app covers everything from VFR charts and airport diagrams to weather, NOTAMs, TFRs, fuel prices, and basic synthetic vision.

The Real-Plan feature auto-generates routes based on range, fuel stops, terrain avoidance, and weather, then lets you file directly from the app. Instrument pilots can purchase the IFR add-on, providing all the necessary charts as well as overlays for approach, departure, and arrival procedures.

Also on display was the rugged new X7 Aviation Tablet, which was built specifically to run iFly EFB. With a 2600-nit screen, 7.5-hour battery life, and a lightweight, flight-friendly build, it’s a practical option for those who want hardware and software to play nicely together in any cockpit.

The company’s story started when co-founders Walter Boyd and Bill Strahan hacked together their own moving map for a trip through Mexico in a Grumman Traveler. What started as a workaround eventually turned into a full-fledged flight app built by pilots who were fed up with expensive and complicated alternatives.

I got a chance to play with the software at EAA Oshkosh AirVenture… and it's easy to see why the company is so proud of its work. The tech is extremely user-friendly and simple to learn, especially in comparison to other major EFB providers that prioritize quantity over quality in their settings. And that’s not even factoring in the massive price difference: iFly EFB costs $95/year for VFR-only or $150/year for IFR with all features included, versus packages ranging from $125 to $370/year through competitors.
