FAA Refuses To Ban Night Flights At Southern California Airport

The FAA has rejected a proposed ban on night operations at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, California, saying the ban would harm the nation's air transportation system.

Ongoing System Enhancements Boost Performance, Reliability

AAI Corporation said Tuesday that its Shadow Tactical Unmanned Aircraft Systems (TUAS) have completed 100,000 missions. With 113 systems ordered and 87 delivered, Shadow systems are deployed with the U.S. Army, Army National Guard, Army Special Forces and Marine Corps.

FAA Approves Arkansas Children's Hospital HFDM Program

First Dedicated HEMS Operator To Implement FAA Approved Program

Arkansas Children's Hospital (ACH) has received FAA approval for their HFDM/FOQA program, the first dedicated HEMS provider to reach that goal. The ACH HFDM program will serve ACH's fleet of two S76 C+ Single Pilot Instrument equipped helicopters and will provide increased visibility into the ACH flight operations.

But Launch Date Has A Conflict At KSC

Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) has requested a February 2nd launch date for the first flight of the Falcon 9 heavy lift launch vehicle from Kennedy Space Center, but the Air Force 45th Space Wing says there is already a launch scheduled for that day.

NASA Florida Space Grant Consortium And Space Florida Award $453,000

The NASA Florida Space Grant Consortium (FSGC), and Space Florida have announced the selection and award of 22 space research and education grants for 2009. The Florida Space Research Program (FSRP) will provide a total of $453,191 in funding to selected recipients.

The chair of the Senate Transportation Aviation Subcommittee says he is working on a bill that would ban all personal electronic devices in airliner cockpits. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) says the bill is intended to prevent another incident like the one that occurred on Northwest Flight 188.

Masten Space Systems And Armadillo Aerospace Take The Prizes

NASA will award $1.65 million in prize money Thursday to a pair of innovative aerospace companies that successfully simulated landing a spacecraft on the moon and lifting off again: a $1 million first prize to Masten Space Systems of Mojave, California, and a $500,000 second prize to Armadillo Aerospace of Rockwall, Texas.

Robert Wilson Tapped As GAMA Chairman

The board of directors of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) has elected Robert Wilson, president of Honeywell Business and General Aviation, as GAMA's chairman for 2010. Wilson previously served as GAMA's vice chairman and chairman of GAMA's Technical Policy Committee.

Mechanisms intended to add lift during certain portions of flight. They include common devices such as flaps and slats, as well as less common devices such as leading edge extensions and blown flaps. Generally they are divided into two classes, powered and unpowered.
