Predator Downed Over Iraq

'They Got Off a Lucky Shot,' Said General

In a first-ever report of such a happening, it looks as though the US has lost its first Predator UAV to Iraqi fire.

The shootdown, on Monday, was reported as having been the result of enemy fighter activity. General Richard Myers, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, characterized the loss as the result of an Iraqi "lucky shot."

The Predator reconnaissance UAV, certainly no performance match for any fighter made since late in WWI, was reported over the southern no-fly zone imposed by the UN after the Gulf War. As the non-aviation press (unfamiliar with UAVs) says, "there were no survivors." Just so you know, there were no casualties, either.
