CA Pilot Flying For Wounded Warriors Fatally Injured In Accident

Was Helping Launch Gliders When The Plane Went Down

A San Diego area test pilot was fatally injured Thursday when the PA-25 Pawnee he was flying went down in the desert north of Los Angeles, CA.

The Times of San Diego reports that the pilot has been identified as 67-year-old Channing Morse. He was reportedly volunteering with the Wounded Warrior Project at the time of the accident, towing gliders aloft with wounded vets aboard. No one else was injured in the accident.

Morse's sister told reporters that he had graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy and had been a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. She said he had just released a glider when his Pawnee went down.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the accident occurred in the Antelope Valley.

Morse had at one time been named "U.S. Test Pilot of the Year." He is survived by a wife, a daughter, and a grandchild.
