NORAD Jets Intercept Kitfox In NY

Second Plane Also Strayed Into A Presidential TFR Last Week

The pilot of a Kitfox (similar airplane shown in file photo) was probably pretty surprised to see a pair of NORAD F-15's on an intercept course last Monday night, but that's what happens when even the smallest aircraft finds itself in violation of a Presidential TFR.

The incident happened about 1830 EDT last Monday over Long Island in Suffolk County, NY. President Obama was attending two fundraising events in Connecticut that evening, including one at the Westport, CT, home of Harvey Weinstein, a well-known Hollywood producer.
The FAA interviewed the pilot of the Kitfox. It was not known if he would be charged or disciplined.
The New York Daily News reports that the second aircraft reportedly strayed into a TFR near New Haven, CT, about an hour later. It was also intercepted by F-15s, but allowed to continue on to its destination.
FAA spokesman Jim Peters told the paper that pilots have an obligation to "make sure if they are flying near the boundaries that they are aware that they must stay out and fly around it."
