History In Pictures: Library Of Congress Wright Collection

Pictures Lost In Time Now Found Online

They were glass negatives of the Wright brothers' famous first flight and for years, they were hidden away in the archives of the Library of Congress. Now, they've been digitized and are available online.

The Wright brothers themselves took many of the shots, like this one of the North Carolina dunes where they made their first flight (above).

In all, there are more than 300 of these images available online. In the picture above, the Wrights photographed their camp on Kill Devil Hill (NC).

They also include several shots of the flyer in action over Simms Station in Dayton (OH), where the Wrights started a flying school shortly after their historic first.

But some of the most remarkable photos, recreated from the original glass negatives, show the Wright flyer at Kitty Hawk (above).
