NTSB Prelim: Piper PA-28-140

Shortly After The Airplane Passed The Final Approach Fix Inbound, The Engine Lost Power

On April 1, 2021, about 1630 central daylight time, a Piper PA-28-140, N7274F, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Augusta, Kansas. The pilots were not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.

The pilot-in-command reported that he was performing a practice VOR/DME-A instrument approach into Augusta Municipal Airport (3AU) with a safety pilot onboard. Shortly after the airplane passed the final approach fix inbound, the engine lost power.

The pilot’s efforts to restore engine power were not successful. The pilot-in-command executed a forced landing to a field.

The right wing struck a fence post during the landing resulting in substantial damage to the fuselage and right wing.
