Classic Aero-TV: Trio Avionics - The Latest STC Crossover

From 2017: Trio Autopilot Installed In Cessna 182P Airplane

Sometimes to get something done, you have to bypass the big names and look to smaller companies to accomplish your goals.

That was the experience of the STC Group when it went to look for an autopilot for installation in a Cessna 182P airplane, and led to an STC for a non-certified product in the aircraft.

Paul Odum, CEO of the STC Group, told ANN news editor Tom Patton that he and his partner were looking for something they could install themselves in the airplane, and the answer came from Trio Avionics. The company pointed him to a retired Cessna engineer who had a field approval for a Trio Pro Pilot in a similar airplane.

The STC that was obtained by the STC group is for the installation kit which allows the Pro Pilot autopilot to be installed in Cessna 172 and 182 airplanes. Odum said that the group received the authorization about five months after making the initial application. The company had to develop technical drawings and a flight test regimen for the process.

They are currently working on an additional STC for PA-28 aircraft, he said, and future plans include STCs for Cessna Cardinal, Piper Comanche and Cessna 195 airplanes.
