Airbus Helicopters Looks Ahead To First Flight Of VSR700 VTOL UAV

Aircraft Should Be Flying By The End Of The Year, Company Says

The VSR700 VTOL UAS introduced by Airbus Helicopters in October of last year should fly for the first time before the end of 2017, according to company CEO Guillaume Faury.

Janes reports that Faury announced the timeline during a press briefing January 27. He said that the company and French naval shipbuilder DCNS are developing the platforms for the first flight. Military qualification should be approved in 2019.

The VSR700 is based on the Helicopters Guimbal Cabri G2 light helicopter equipped with autonomous technologies like sense-and-avoid capability. Airbus Helicopters will develop the aircraft, while DCNS will take the lead integrating the aircraft into ship-based operations.

THe VSR700 is in the same category as the Northrop Grumman MQ-8B Fire Scout, and will perform similar missions, according to Airbus.
