Southwest Airlines presented something of a good news, bad news
report Tuesday. The Dallas-based low-cost carrier reported it flew
5.1 billion revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in February 2009, a 6.0
percent decrease from the 5.4 billion RPMs flown in February
2008.
Lowers First Stage Mockup Softly To Arizona Desert
NASA and industry engineers successfully completed the second
drop test of a drogue parachute for the Ares I rocket. The test
took place February 28 at the US Army's Yuma Proving Ground near
Yuma, AZ.
Senior White House staffers tell The Washington Post that
President Obama sent a letter recently to Russian President Dmitry
Medvedev, aimed at improving relations between the two countries.
Among the ideas reportedly put forth was a significant concession

The Japanese Ministry of Defence recently signed a contract for

Electronics manufacturer Orbit International announced recently
its Electronics Group has received a design and qualification
contract from a leading global prime contractor to support the

The US Coast Guard Monday rescued a boater whose vessel capsized

rescue mission for three others who were onboard.

The School of Aviation Technology at Southern California
Logistics Airport (VCV) in Victorville announced Friday it has
received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to begin
formal instruction of students.
The Federal Aviation Administration has approved the expenditure
of funds from airline passenger ticket taxes to pay for the design
and engineering drawings of the first phase of the planned
modernization project at Chicago's O'Hare Airport (ORD).
It's been only about a year since Massachusetts finished a $15
billion tunnel designed in part to provide better access by car to
Boston's Logan International Airport. Now, Governor Deval Patrick
wants to raise parking fees at the airport to as much as $7 an
hour, in an effort to keep cars away and force airport patrons to
use mass transit.
Boeing, through its Space Exploration division, submitted a
proposal to NASA last week for Altair lunar lander design support.
NASA is expected to award multiple contracts this spring.
US domestic airlines have reported what might have been an
expected benefit of a la carte checked-bag charges. In 2008 -- as
fees prompted many passengers to travel lighter -- airlines lost
1.3 million fewer bags than in 2007.
Cessna announced Monday the Wichita, KS-based planemaker
recently achieved Russian type certification for the Citation
Sovereign from Russia's MAK (Interstate Aviation Committee,
Aviation Register).
European planemaker Airbus recently delivered the 500th A321
ever produced. The aircraft was handed over to Air France at
Airbus' Delivery Centre in Hamburg.
A contractual tool used by some airlines to stabilize jet fuel
costs. A fuel hedge contract commits an airline to paying a
pre-determined price for future jet fuel purchases.
