WhiteKnightTwo Back To Flying Status

Passes 150 Test Flights With All-Virgin Galactic Crew On Board

WhiteKnightTwo ... the launch vehicle for Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo, is back to flying status after being taken out of service for its annual at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California.

On its blog, Virgin Galactic says that the plane recently made its 150th test flight, and it was the first time that it was flown by a crew made up of exclusively Virgin Galactic employees. All of the ground crew and mission controllers, as well as pilots, were part of the Galactic crew.

NBC News reports that, according to Virgin Galactic, the aircraft is in a transition between operation by Scaled Composites and the nascent space line.

Later this summer, WhiteKnightTwo is expected to be mated with SpaceShipTwo for additional testing that will eventually lead to the first commercial flights. Virgin Galactic founder Sir Richard Branson says he hopes to be aboard a sub-orbital flight by the end of the year.
