Rude Encounter With Airline Passenger Led To Private Plane For Oprah

Calls The Aircraft Her 'Greatest Luxury' In A Recent Interview

Oprah Winfrey may have one of the most recognizable faces in the world, and she is perceived as being a very open person.

But "there are days when I am more open and warm than others," the television mogul said in a recent interview for a cover story in British Vogue. And when asked by Editor-in-Chief Edward Enninful about her "greatest luxury", she said it as her private aircraft.

Winfrey told Enninful that a 1991 encounter in an airport with a rude traveler led her to purchase the aircraft. In the interview, as relayed by MSN, Winfrey said she was in an airport "minding my own business" when a woman approached her and said "You're not acting like you do on TV."

Winfrey told Enninful that the woman said she is often seen on TV "hugging everybody", but at the airport, she was just sitting down and not warmly greeting fans.

"If I'm in an airport, I'm not necessarily hugging people, OK? But I am always just myself," she said in the interview.

Winfrey currently owns a Gulfstream G650, the latest in a string of aircraft she has owner over the years. Others have included a G550 and a Bombardier Global Express XLS. The Wall Street Journal reported in 2009 that in a graduation speech at Duke University, Winfrey told the audience that "It’s great to have a private jet. Anyone that tells you that having your own private jet isn’t great is lying to you.”
