SpaceX Hopes For February 2 Launch For Falcon 9

But Launch Date Has A Conflict At KSC

Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) has requested a February 2nd launch date for the first flight of the Falcon 9 heavy lift launch vehicle from Kennedy Space Center, but the Air Force 45th Space Wing says there is already a launch scheduled for that day.

SpaceX says it plans to deliver the components of the first Falcon 9 rocket to KSC this month, with a plan to launch three months later.

Falcon 9 Test Firing

Space News reports that the Falcon 9 was supposed to have flown two years ago, but that development of the launch vehicle has take longer than originally expected. The February launch is supposed to be a demonstration flight that will carry a prototype cargo-carrying spacecraft. But SpaceX officials said it is not one of the demo flights required by NASA for the COTS (Commercial Orbital Transportation Service) program.

The launch already scheduled for February 2nd is a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket carrying NASA’s Solar Dynamic Observatory.
