Piper Cherokee Down In Lake Michigan

Two On Board Fatally Injured

A Piper Cherokee thought to be en route to Oshkosh Saturday went down in Lake Michigan, resulting in the fatal injury of two people on board.

The Piper went down early Saturday afternoon in the lake about 1.5 miles east of Cudahy, WI, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. The bodies of two men, described as "middle aged," were pulled from the airplane after it was located in about 42 feet of water. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that officials said that the search would continue until they were satisfied that there was no one else on board the airplane.

One of the men taken from the wreckage was identified as William Gensler of Racine, WI. The name of the other person is not being released pending notification of relatives.

The plane departed from Batten International Airport in Racine, WI, where it is registered.

Sixteen divers searched the lake for more than six hours, according to the paper.  Two helicopters and seven boats were also involved in the search.
