Malaysian Operator Chooses “All Business” Turboprop

Pair of ATR 72s to be Outfitted with Refreshed “HighLine” Interior

Malaysian carrier Berjaya Air announced the purchase of an unorthodox pair of aircraft, with a pair of brand-new ATR 72-600s to be outfitted with what the manufacturer calls the ATR HighLine interior.

The “All-Business Class” configuration provides a single aisle, 1-by-1 row layout with personal storage space beside each leather-upholstered recliner. It’s a nice looking design, one that looks more like an upscale private jet than a point-to-point regional turboprop. The new aircraft will help Berjaya to rebrand itself into a premium marque to ferry customers throughout its collection of resorts and hotels. From its main base at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah airport, Berjaya will 'operate the lowest emission aircraft available on the regional market', but who knows how much that will matter to prospective customers.

Berjaya’s owner Tan Sri Vincent Tan said the new aircraft were the best fit for the mission. “Berjaya’s vision is to offer passengers a unique VIP experience, with the highest level of comfort and operational efficiency, while also focusing on sustainability. Our ATR aircraft equipped with the ATR HighLine collection will help us make the most preserved destinations accessible to our guests with the most comfortable, responsible and future-minded aircraft on the market.”

Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, Chief Executive Officer of ATR, was understandably excited to see a brand appreciate the HighLine design. The ATR series has gotten some bragging rights for itself owing to its miserly emissions, but that doesn’t fill seats - luxury does. Having the ATR 72 family become widely known for more than its regional airline service would be great for the brand.

“We fully share Berjaya Air’s vision that there should not be any compromises between passenger experience, accessibility and sustainability. Their premium positioning further proves the versatility of our aircraft, which uniquely enable operators to benefit from exceptional comfort, unrivalled airport accessibility and low emissions on regional routes.”
