Two-Stroke Engines Designed For A Variety Of Unmanned Vehicles
Avanti Unmanned Systems, a subsidiary of Blue Sky Innovations Group, has been named as the exclusive distributor for DLA’s new line of two-stroke gasoline engines developed to power a variety of aerial, marine and terrestrial unmanned vehicle systems.

Archer stated that the distributorship agreement covers North America, South America, Australia and New Zealand on an exclusive basis. It also includes Europe and Africa on a non-exclusive basis.
“Until now, unmanned vehicle designers and manufacturers looking for the power and operational duration times of a light weight, gasoline engine have been forced to use off-the-shelf ‘model airplane’ engines. In many instances these engines have proven to be inefficient and unreliable,” said Timothy T. (Tim) Archer, CEO of Avanti Unmanned Systems. “The new family of engines that Avanti Unmanned Systems is providing are all specifically designed and manufactured to provide high performance and reliability for any type of remotely operated and autonomous platforms.”
“The new family of DLA engines are manufactured to the highest-quality standards using true aviation-grade materials, so designers and operators are assured optimum performance and reliability regardless of the type of vehicle application,” stated Chris Goodman, president of Avanti Unmanned Systems. “With available, electric starters and alternators, these new-generation engines can be used in either stand-alone installations or as part of a hybrid power configuration.”
Avanti Unmanned Systems provides five models of two-stroke, gasoline engines:
- DLA32cc Series: single cylinder, 3.8 horsepower
- DLA58cc Series: single cylinder, 6.0 horsepower
- DLA64cc Series: dual cylinder, 7.2 horsepower
- DLA116cc Series: dual cylinder, 12.0 horsepower
- DLA180cc Series: dual cylinder, 18.5 horsepower
Common features of these new-generation engines include:
- Crank Cases, crankshafts, bearings and connecting rods are machined/produced from aviation-grade alloys and precision machined to the very high tolerances required by commercial unmanned systems
- Runs on readily available 40:1 and 50:1 fuel/synthetic oil mixture
- Exceptional power-to-weight ratios
- Specifically designed and manufactured for professional/industrial applications – these are not lightweight ‘model airplane’ engines
- Available in either carbureted or electronic fuel injected models for maximum fuel efficiency
- Available in either air- or liquid-cooled versions
- Available with or without a built-in starter and alternator.
“The materials and machining quality found in these engines is on par with that of an FAA certified general aviation piston engine,” Goodman said. “These are extremely high-quality power plants and everyone at Avanti Unmanned Systems is extremely excited and proud to be selected to bring these exceptional engines to market.”
