Anniversary of B-17/P-63 Collision Casts Pall Over Aviation Discovery Fest

"No Airshow This Year" says Commemorative Air Force

Recognizing the tragedy of last year's Wings Over Dallas show, Aviation Discovery Fest won't be seeing a "traditional airshow" later this month per CAF personnel.

The change is meant to help audiences, friends, and family navigate the lingering pains of loss after a horrific collision between the CAF's B-17 Flying Fortress and a Bell P-63 KingCobra that claimed the lives of 6 aviators. The casualties included Terry Barker, Curtis Rowe, Craig Hutain, Len Root, Dan Ragan and Kevin Michels.

The CAF made the decision earlier this year when planning out their schedule, feeling that it was just a little too soon to get back into the swing of things. They tapped local ABC affiliate WFAA to clarify. "We felt it was appropriate and out of respect for the families and friends of those lost during last year's accident to forego the airshow element this year," read the CAF's email.

Instead of some airborne displays, attendees can enjoy some historic (and parked) aircraft, the aviation activity center, and a number of meet & greets with a variety of veterans. The Aviation Discovery Fest runs from November 10th through the 12 in Dallas, Texas.
