200 Explorers Have Called The Station Home

NASA will commemorate the 10th anniversary of human life, work and research on the International Space Station (ISS) with an October 27 series of roundtable discussions. The events will feature former space station residents, key leaders and team members who have guided the station through its first 10 years. Panelists at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida; Johnson Space Center in Houston; Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL; and NASA Headquarters in Washington will discuss the challenges and accomplishments of the station's first decade of assembly and research and consider the promise of the upcoming decade of microgravity research.

On November 2, 2000, Expedition 1 Commander Bill Shepherd and Flight Engineers Sergei Krikalev and Yuri Gidzenko became the first residents of the space station. Since then, 200 explorers have visited the orbiting complex, 15 nations have contributed modules and hardware, and more than 600 experiments have been conducted aboard the station.

The all-day discussions will begin with an 0900 storytelling event featuring veteran Skylab astronaut Joe Kerwin. That event was recorded on Wednesday, October 20, at Johnson. The October 27 event will be held at Kennedy Space Center from 1130 to 1230 EDT, and will include:

• Bill Dowdell, deputy director, ISS and spacecraft processing
• David Bethay, director, program management development, The Boeing Company
