FAA Closes Control Tower In Las Vegas

Move Follows A Positive Test Of An Air Traffic Controller For Coronavirus

The FAA has closed the control tower at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas after an air traffic controller tested positive for Coronavirus.

USA Today reports that the airport remains open with "operations continuing at a reduced rate due to the closure of the ATC tower," according to a Twitter post from the airport Thursday.

Southwest Airlines, which accounts for the highest number of operations at McCarran, has cancelled hundreds of flights at the airport, according to FlightAware.

Southwest has also cancelled hundreds of flights in and out of Midway Airport in Chicago following a similar control tower closure. The FAA said the tower at Midway would be cleaned according to CDC guidelines.

NATCA said in a statement that it has asked the FAA to keep the Midway tower closed "until it can be disinfected according to appropriate public health standards."

Southwest is urging passengers to check on their flights' status prior to leaving for the airport.
