Tokyo Names JAL Group For eVTOL Program Phase I

Consortium Features Archer Midnight In City’s AAM Implementation

Archer Aviation announced that a consortium led by Japan Airlines and featuring Archer’s Midnight aircraft was selected by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to join the first phase of the city’s “eVTOL Implementation Project.”

The objective of phase one of the project is to assess the market and build the operational infrastructure to conduct demonstration flights over Tokyo Bay and river routes. Those are important steps that lead toward ramping up commercial operations in the coming years.

The selection acknowledges the robust partnership between Archer and Soracle, the joint venture company formed between JAL and Sumitomo Corporation. Archer and Soracle had previously announced a strategic alliance in November 2024 to jointly launch air taxi operations in Japan, focusing on providing services in cities where ground transportation is challenged by traffic congestion or geographic barriers.

Adam Goldstein, Founder and CEO of Archer said, “We applaud the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s ‘eVTOL Implementation Program.’ The selection of our consortium to be a part of this innovative government approach gives Archer, together with JAL, Sumitomo Corporation and Soracle, a critical opportunity to help make the promise of urban mobility an everyday reality in Tokyo, the world’s largest city.”

Takao Suzuki, Executive Officer and Senior Vice President-Innovation of Japan Airlines said, “Japan Airlines is honored to work with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and our consortium partners on the first phase of the eVTOL Implementation Project.”

Archer has continued to build momentum in the Asia-Pacific region with a recent announcement of an exclusive deal with Korean Air that includes the potential purchase of up to 100 Midnight aircraft.
