While at EAA AirVenture 2014, Special Aero-News Correspondent Michael Maya Charles has a chance to take a step back in time with Bob Baker from Alva, Oklahoma who is restoring a World War I era Curtis JN-4 Jenny.
Baker is well known and recognized for his restoration of two P-51 Mustangs, and he tells Charles that he wanted to try something different. The JN-4 Jenny certainly qualifies as something being different from a P-51.
As you hear the story of Baker’s restoration of this classic World War I trainer plane the video shows you details of its construction. When viewing the airframe without fabric covering it would appear that this is a replica rather than a restoration. Baker explains how he found the jenny and points out that most all the hardware and even much of the wood is from the original machine.
This video gives you a good look at the engineering and design that went into what are considered to be old and outdated airplanes. You have to place yourself in a mindset of being an aircraft designer in 1916 to appreciate what it took to build an airplane in those days. In this video you will enjoy your look back at the historic days of early aviation.
