FAA Ends Commercial Space Astronaut Wings Program

FAA Will Recognize Individuals Reaching Space on Website

With the advent of the commercial space tourism era, starting in 2022, the FAA has reconsidred the process and will now recognize individuals who reach space on its website instead of issuing Commercial Space Astronaut Wings. Any individual who is on an FAA-licensed or permitted launch and reaches 50 statute miles above the surface of the Earth will be listed on the site. “The U.S. commercial human spaceflight industry has come a long way from conducting test flights to launching paying customers into space,” FAA Associate Administrator Wayne Monteith said.

Daher has laid the foundation of its new 1/2-acre facility, a development center that will focus on the advancement of aerostructures and composite expertise. The Helicopter Association International released their statement on the newest FAA Airworthiness Directives issued before the imminent rollout of 5G cellular networks and their possible effects on navigation instruments. The HAI appreciates the difficult position the FAA has had to assume to protect aviation throughout the country, noting that the new changes will address much of their safety concerns. They also joined the “Aviation Safety Proposal for 5G Limits”, an industry effort to address possible shortcomings in safety regarding the new technology.

AD: Pilatus Aircraft Ltd. Airplanes

AD 2021-24-01 Prompted By A Report Of Strake Attachment Brackets And The Fuselage Frame Failing

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for Pilatus Aircraft Ltd. (Pilatus) Model PC-12/45, PC-12/47, and PC-12/47E airplanes with Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) SA00634DE installed. This AD was prompted by a report of strake attachment brackets and the fuselage frame failing at the upper most bracket attachment location. This AD requires inspecting the strake, attachment brackets, surrounding structure, and bolts and replacing components and repairing damage if necessary. The FAA is issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products. This AD is effective January 13, 2022.

Airplane Impacted In A Right Wing Low Near Vertical Attitude

On November 07, 2021, about 1405 Alaska standard time, a Gerald Jones 2+2 homebuilt airplane, N540AK sustained substantial damage when it was involved in an accident near Kodiak, Alaska. The pilot and sole occupant was fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The pilot had departed from Kodiak Municipal Airport (KDK), Kodiak, Alaska destined for a remote off-airport landing site near Saltery Cove. A friend of the pilot reported that the purpose of the flight was to transport hunting gear to the remote location to establish a hunting camp.
